Swanwick Lodge

Swanwick Lodge aims to provide high quality services to children and young people in a secure setting and provide them with opportunities to develop healthy, safe and productive lives, which will enable them to benefit from making a positive contribution to their communities in the future.

The primary aim of Swanwick Lodge is to provide a secure facility that can provide a safe and child centred environment in which children and young people can begin to address the issues that have led to their loss of liberty. We aim to consider all aspects of the child’s well-being including physical, mental, emotional, health and the lifestyle choices they make.

Swanwick Lodge uses the stabilisation model with young people. This is a ‘whole team’ relationship-based approach to supporting the young person to achieve improved emotional stability and behavioural control through the provision of a safe environment in which to explore, understand and develop improved resilience.

Early intervention, problem solving, social skills, group living and pro-social modelling form the daily ethos of Swanwick Lodge, which is based on respect, positive reinforcement and positive role modelling. Underpinning our philosophy is our belief that all children are capable of change, to engage and achieve, leading to them making more positive choices about their lives and their futures. Our aims and ethos are clearly displayed on the walls throughout the child/ young person’s living quarters and in the school.

Swanwick Lodge is a well designed facility. The living accommodation, on-site school and administration blocks are arranged around the perimeter of the site with a central garden providing an area for recreation and activities. Swanwick Lodge is a 16 bedded facility comprised of two separate residential units. Each young person has their own bedroom with en-suite shower and toilet. The bedrooms are designed to ensure maximum security, whilst permitting privacy and personal space.

Swanwick Lodge also has a purpose built on-site school as part of the facility. This is furnished and resourced to the highest standard. In a recent Ofsted inspection (April 2017) it was stated that “The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good overall. Teachers develop very good rapport with young people.”
